A Pair of Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Ships Listed Unaccounted For after Departing Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and recovery effort is presently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two unlocated sailing vessels transporting relief goods en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Naval Search Operations Deployed
Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were transporting at least 9 personnel, according to a official statement.
The boats had been scheduled to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.
Background of Relief to Cuba
Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through widespread national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with suitable safety equipment and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort stated.
The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their consular staff.
"Our team is working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Earlier Humanitarian Mission
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried a significant amount of donated goods to the nation.
That vessel, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and food.
Larger International Climate
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba because of power shortages.
Foreign policy pressure have intensified lately, with comments from different officials emphasizing the complicated state of diplomatic ties.
In response to recent comments, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that early stages of negotiations had begun, although their current progress remains uncertain.
The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its reach to find the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the crews.
To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
