The world of Formula 1 has introduced the official language that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its new 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is embarking on what is potentially the most significant regulation change in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the required adoption of 100% sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a significantly increased energy storage, driving significant developments in the cars' aerodynamics.

Throughout races, competitors will strategically manage battery power – including during qualifying laps – to achieve the optimal performance.

Wide-ranging research were conducted with a mix of viewers, including new, casual and core fans, to determine which terminology would improve understanding of the central aspects of the upcoming rules.

The primary aim was to present a set of intricate features of the sport as accessible as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the active aerodynamics – have been discarded in favor of intuitive labels that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the innovation.

What's the New Technology?

Regulators explain that drivers will have increased agency to make decisions regarding battery management, energy recovery, and conservation.

The new regulations mandate a set of functions that will be visually displayed on broadcast screens to aid the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a surge of additional ERS power accessible when a driver is close behind the leading car to facilitate an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a driver-operated battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It delivers the driver maximum power at the click of a switch.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be used with calculation, as the total energy is capped.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings move automatically – flattening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and increased velocity, and angling down in the bends for peak grip.
  • Energy Harvesting: Cars can replenish their battery with energy harvested under braking, or during throttle lift at the straight's end or in sections where only limited engine output is applied.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is expected to drop by approximately 15-30%, although teams will naturally regain performance as they develop their cars.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will utilize moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straights to reduce drag and enhance velocity and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Pirelli tyres will keep the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30mm at the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The 2026 engines will have an near-equal balance in energy output by the petrol engine and the ERS, a rise from about one-fifth electric power under present rules.

The ERS setup is simplified through the elimination of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive unit that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
