Battlefield 6's Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Discussions Regarding AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a new playlist called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough setup but includes several notable changes:
- Every squad has just eight human participants, with the rest filled by AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities done by human gamers award complete experience points, while AI activities offer lower rewards.
- Just a pair of locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Features like Player tags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.
In short, this mode lives up to its name: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it provides additional choices for gamers looking for different ways to have fun with the game. But, gaming history has shown one thing, it's that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of Battlefield 6 fans are upset.
Community Reactions: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer real players. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads a response to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking concept," says a different user. At the same time, in community forums, a player remarks, "It's unclear where we are headed with this title," while another lists all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."
However, for every complaint, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who have lives and can't play this game 24/7. Allow them to find a middle ground," adds another. One reply via social media explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," while someone else applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Criticisms and Community Feedback
Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase queue times more extended for different playlists due to the large amount of playlists in the game already. Similarly, certain regions often face mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of real players, even though it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Lastly, a major complaints is that a previous feature was meant to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they tried to remove bot farms from the mode. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the community compromising in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this mode as the developers "making a mistake so hard, I had great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?
If the development team has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult were adjusted very quickly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, if their data shows this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to change it again.
