Brian Eno Calls On Public Help to Get Together for Palestine Lullaby to UK Christmas No 1.
A fundraising initiative is aiming to propel a traditional song from Palestine to the top of the UK charts. The effort seeks to send support to communities in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian artistic heritage.
A Chance for Solidarity and an "Chart Upset"
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who features on the track, stated that the single 'Lullaby' represents a moment to support Palestinians over the Christmas period. He remarked the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“It would be incredible if that came to pass, yes,” he said. “I wouldn't be completely disheartened if it doesn't manage to, festive releases are a thing unto themselves.”
Defiant Message of Dignity and Freedom
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the adaptation of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's resilient spirit.
“It has a very special place for many individuals,” Barghouti said. “It’s basically saying that I would rather die in dignity than live a life without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we want to live a dignified life that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
Recording Origins and Star-Studded Lineup
The song was recorded after a large-scale benefit event held in September. Originally intended to be captured during the live event, the rendition was shelved during the concert due to scheduling overruns.
The diverse array of artists featured on Lullaby features a group of well-known figures from the scene. All were part of the benefit event, which reportedly raised a significant sum for charitable causes.
Creation and Launch
Lullaby was produced by a trio of producers and composers. The single showcases a mix of the traditional Arabic lyrics with new English lyrics.
The organizers behind the initiative have stated that their goal is to collect the highest amount for a charitable pot. These donations will be allocated to Palestinian causes through an established charity.
“There is no a specific target,” a figure commented. “We aim for as much as possible. Of course, the higher the total, the greater the impact. Every penny goes out to the people of Gaza.”
The reality in the territory was described as its extreme devastation, with a vast majority of buildings reportedly levelled or seriously harmed.
“In that context, a couple of million is unlikely to make an enormous impact. But I think what truly matters is above all raising awareness for this issue and showing the human dimension of the story.”
The song is launching on Friday. Additionally, a complete film of the benefit event will be made available for streaming on a popular streaming site from later in the month.
