Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then located many other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
An important political figure stated the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
