Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a new development, Mayor Adams changed his position, announcing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in communities where he maintains significant backing.
“It's essential to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how vital this race is,” Adams stated.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention globally and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.
During a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an separate media briefing on the same day, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”
The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
