Finland Stuns Back-to-Back Reigning Title Holders US in U20 World Championship Quarterfinal Round.
Arttu Välilä netted the winner at 2:11 of extra time as the Finnish squad engineered a remarkable 4-3 win over the reigning two-time champion American team on Friday evening in the IIHF World Junior Championship last eight.
"We must give full credit to the US," stated Finland's leader Aron Kiviharju. "That's a hell of a team, full of exceptional individuals and a superbly organized team. But I said we were seeking that revenge from the previous final, and I think we truly deserved it this evening."
In the semi-finals on Sunday, the Finns will take on the Swedish team, while the Canadians will play the Czech Republic. The Swedes beat Latvia six to three, Canada produced a five-goal first period in a seven to one rout over the Slovakian team, and Czechia overcame Switzerland by a 6-2 margin.
Dramatic Final Frame and Overtime
The Michigan State Spartan Lee Ryker knotted the score for the U.S. team with 1:33 left in regulation and the University of Notre Dame goalie N. Kempf pulled for an additional skater.
Lee Tuuva and Joona Saarelainen scored in a fifty-five-second burst in the third period to give their team a 2-1 lead. Tuuva tied it at 2 with seven minutes and seventeen seconds to go, then assisted on Saarelainen’s game-leading goal with six minutes and twenty-two seconds on the clock. J. Saarelainen also assisted on Tuuva’s goal.
Key Performances and Reactions
The Boston University defenseman C. Hutson had a goal and an assist for the Americans after taking a shot in the head versus the Swiss and sitting out the next two contests.
"In my opinion we made good plays for most of the game," Hutson commented. "But the little bounces that they got, a lot of their high-quality opportunities came from our errors."
His BU teammate C. Eiserman gave the U.S. a two to one edge on a man advantage with 9:45 left in the second period. He took a feed from Hutson and beat the Finnish goaltender with a one-timer from the right circle.
Hutson scored on a rush 35 seconds into the second. Heikki Ruohonen tied it at four minutes and forty-six seconds on a quick shot from the left side.
Between the Pipes Stats
- Finland's goalie stopped 28 shots.
- The American netminder made twenty-one stops.
The Americans lost their last two games – falling 6-3 to the Swedes on Wednesday in the final preliminary game – after winning their initial three matches.
"It has been an privilege to coach this group," said the American bench boss. "They played a terrific game tonight and came up just short. Give Finland. It's an empty emotion right now, but our players left everything on the ice."
Additional Playoff Action
In the late game in the host city, the Canadians overwhelmed Slovakia with the aforementioned first-period explosion.
C. Reschny, T. Iginla, Michael Misa, Sam O’Reilly and B. Martin scored in the first period, and Porter Martone and Cole Beaudoin scored in the second. Jack Ivankovic turned aside twenty-one shots.
"This demonstrates how dominant we are," Martin remarked. "Taking a five-nothing advantage, it kind of saps their confidence."

Meanwhile, in Minneapolis T. Galvas, S. Drancak, Adam Jiricek, P. Sikora, J. Klima and J. Fibigr scored for the Czechs.
