Israelis mark second anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace talks proceed
Citizens have come together across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of people who died in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' representatives gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the day's discussions finished without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- Post-war management of the region
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everyone home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do every compromise required for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that about 70% of the population desire the war to end in return for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the western district, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the night arrives, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"We are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Medical Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of six people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
