Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
