Forecasters are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snow likely over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are due to be low, making additional clothing essential, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Issued

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this indicated the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
