The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Overwhelming Fan Response

Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
