According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
