A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and looking forward to playing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
