The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
