The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
