This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official had her own Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
