NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly after his electoral win in November.

"This decision was based on our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving there, it will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.

Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
